Why a garage door comes off its track

A broken spring or cable. When a spring or cable fails, the door loses its support and can twist or drop out of line. That is a common reason a door leaves its track.
An impact. A car bumping the door, a stray ball or a heavy hit can knock the rollers out of the track or bend it.
Worn or damaged rollers. Rollers that are cracked, worn flat or stuck don't roll smoothly. They can jump out of the track when the door moves.
A bent or loose track. A track that's bent, or brackets that have worked loose over time, no longer guide the door in a straight line.
Obstructions in the track. Debris, a build-up of dirt or something caught in the track can make a roller jump or jam.
Using the opener on a stuck door. Running the opener while the door is jammed or crooked can push it further out of line and make the damage worse.

The parts of your track system

A garage door rides on several parts that work together. A problem with any one of them can send the door off line.

Tracks

The metal guides on both sides of the door. They run vertically, then curve and run horizontally along the ceiling. They keep the door moving in a straight path.

Rollers

The small wheels on each side of the door that roll inside the tracks. Worn or damaged rollers are a common reason doors bind or jump.

Brackets

These hold the tracks to the wall and ceiling. If they loosen, the track shifts and the door no longer runs true.

Hinges

They join the door's sections and hold the roller shafts. A bent or cracked hinge can pull a section out of line.

Cables

Cables run from the bottom of the door up to the drums. If one slips or breaks, one side of the door hangs lower than the other.

Repair the track or replace parts?

We find the cause first. A door that's put back without fixing the cause is likely to come off again.

Usually a repair

  • The door only slipped out of the track and nothing is bent or broken.
  • The track is slightly out of line and can be realigned.
  • Brackets are loose and can be tightened or reset.

Usually a replacement

  • A track section is bent or creased and can't be straightened.
  • Rollers are cracked, worn or stuck.
  • A hinge or bracket is damaged or cracked.
  • A broken spring or cable caused the problem and needs to be replaced as well.

Common questions

Person using a smartphone

My car is stuck inside. What should I do?

Call us at (252) 832-8312. Don't force the door. Tell us your address and what the door is doing, and we tell you when we can be there.

Can I push the door back onto the track myself?

We don't recommend it. An off-track door can be heavy and unbalanced, and the springs and cables are under tension. Leave it where it is and call us.

What makes a garage door come off its track?

Common causes are a broken spring or cable, worn rollers, a bent or loose track, or the door being hit. We look at all of these when we come out.

Is it safe to close the door if it's only a little crooked?

No. If the door is crooked or off its track, stop using it until it's checked.

How soon can you come?

Same-Day Service Available. Call (252) 832-8312 with your address. The time depends on your location and who is available.

Do you fix stuck doors at businesses?

Yes. We're Residential & Commercial, so we serve homes and businesses.

How do I tell if my door is off track?

Look at the sides of the door. If a roller is out of the track, the door hangs crooked, or there's a gap at one side, it's off track. You may also hear scraping or grinding when it moves.

Can a door come off track more than once?

Yes, if the cause isn't fixed. A worn roller, a bent track or a weak spring will keep causing the same problem. That's why we look for the cause as well as fixing the door.

Will you check the rest of the door while you're here?

Yes. We look at the tracks, rollers, hinges, cables and springs together, so you know the condition of the whole door.
