Garage Door Torsion Spring Repair & Replacement

Heard a loud bang in the garage, and now the door won't open? A broken torsion spring is a common reason. The spring does the heavy lifting. When it breaks, the opener can't lift the door on its own, and the door becomes very heavy.

Joy Garage Services is Residential & Commercial: we repair and replace garage door springs for homes and businesses. Call (252) 832-8312, tell us what happened and where you are, and we come to you. We look at the door, explain what's broken and give you a free estimate. Price Before Work Starts.

What to do first

Safety first: torsion springs are under high tension. Please don't try to adjust, unwind or replace a torsion spring yourself, and don't try to lift a door with a broken spring by hand. Stop using the opener, leave the door where it is, and call us.
  1. Stop pressing the opener button or the remote.
  2. Leave the door where it is. Don't try to lift or lower it by hand.
  3. Keep people and pets away from the door, and don't park under it.
  4. Don't touch the spring, the cables or the bar above the door.
  5. Call (252) 832-8312 and tell us what you heard and where you are.

TORSION SPRING REPAIR & REPLACEMENT

Why garage door springs break

Everyday use. Every time the door goes up and down, the spring winds and unwinds. Over the years that repeated stress wears the metal until it gives out. A door used many times a day wears its springs faster than one used now and then.
Age. Springs don't last forever. The metal slowly fatigues, and an older spring can break without any warning at all.
Rust and moisture. Damp air, condensation and humid summers can rust a spring. Rust weakens the coil and makes it more likely to snap.
Lack of maintenance. A spring that hasn't been looked at in years can run dry and rub as it winds. A quick visual check now and then helps catch wear before it turns into a break.
Wrong spring for the door. A spring that isn't matched to the weight of your door has to work harder than it should. That can happen after a door is changed or repaired. We check whether the spring fits your door.
An unbalanced door. If the door is heavy on one side or has damaged panels, the springs carry an uneven load and wear faster.

Torsion springs and extension springs

Most garage doors use one of two spring systems. Knowing which one you have helps us understand your door when you call.

Torsion springs

These are mounted on a metal bar above the door opening. They wind up as the door closes and unwind to help lift it. Many modern doors use them, and they usually give smooth, even lifting.

Extension springs

These run along the horizontal tracks on both sides of the door and stretch as the door closes. They are common on older or lighter doors. If one breaks, a safety cable is meant to keep it from flying loose.

One spring or two

Some doors have a single spring, others have two working side by side. A heavier door often uses two. We check how many your door has and whether the setup is right for its weight.

Spring options for heavy-use doors

If your door is used often, such as at a business, we can talk through whether a different spring setup makes sense for it.

Replace one spring or both?

Springs on the same door usually wear at a similar rate. We look at both, tell you what we see, and you decide.

Usually a repair

  • One spring is broken and the other is clearly newer and in good shape.
  • The door is balanced and lifts smoothly once the broken spring is replaced.
  • There's no rust, stretching or wear on the remaining spring.

Usually a replacement

  • Both springs are the same age and one has already broken.
  • The second spring shows rust, wear or a stretched look.
  • You'd rather not have the door stop working again if the second spring fails soon after.
  • The door is heavy or used often, and an even setup keeps it balanced.

Common questions

Hand holding a smartphone

Can I open the door by hand if a spring is broken?

No. A door with a broken spring is very heavy and can fall. Don't lift it by hand and don't keep pressing the opener. Call us and we come to you.

What's the difference between torsion and extension springs?

A torsion spring sits on a metal bar above the door and winds up as the door closes. Extension springs run along the horizontal tracks on each side and stretch as the door closes. We work on both. When you call, tell us what you see above the door.

My door has two springs and only one broke. Should both be replaced?

Springs on the same door are often the same age. When we look at your door, we check both and tell you what we recommend. You decide. Price Before Work Starts.

Can I adjust the spring tension myself?

We don't recommend it. Adjusting a torsion spring needs the right tools and training because of the tension stored in it. Leave it to us.

How soon can you come?

Same-Day Service Available. Call (252) 832-8312 with your address. The time depends on your location and who is available.

Do you replace springs on commercial doors?

Yes. We're Residential & Commercial, so we serve homes and businesses. Tell us about the door when you call.

Why did my spring break without any warning?

Springs wear out from metal fatigue, so there often isn't much to see before one lets go. Age and everyday use are common reasons. The loud bang is the spring snapping.

Can a broken spring damage my opener?

It can. If the opener keeps pushing against a door that is too heavy to lift, it strains the motor and the parts. That's why we say to stop pressing the button once you suspect a spring.

How do I know whether I have torsion or extension springs?

Look above the door. A spring on a bar across the top is torsion. Springs running along the side tracks are extension. If you aren't sure, tell us what you see when you call.
