Garage Door Panel & Impact Damage Repair

Garage door hit by car? Whether you backed into the garage door or a car hit the garage door while pulling in, an impact can leave dented or bent panels, a door that hangs crooked, or your car stuck in the garage. A dented, cracked or bent panel doesn't always mean you need a whole new door. Sometimes the damaged section can be replaced.

Joy Garage Services handles garage door accident repair for homes and businesses: we replace damaged panels and put doors knocked off track back in working order. Whether a single panel can be replaced depends on your door's model and whether a matching panel is available. We check that at the estimate and give you your options. Price Before Work Starts. Call (252) 832-8312.

Call (252) 832-8312 and we come to you. Same-Day Service Available. We'll look at the damaged panel in person and give you a free estimate.

What to do first

Safety first: if the door is badly bent, crooked or off its track after an impact, stop using it and don't run the opener. Don't push or pull the door back by hand, and don't try to force it open to get your car out. Don't pull the manual release cord on a door that's open, bent or off its track, because the door can come down. Don't touch the springs or cables. Keep people and pets away from the door, and call us.
  1. Stop using the door and don't press the opener or remote.
  2. Don't push, pull or force the door back onto the track.
  3. If your car is stuck inside, leave it where it is for now. Don't try to drive out under a damaged door.
  4. Keep people and pets away from the door, and don't walk or park under it.
  5. Don't touch the springs or cables.
  6. Call (252) 832-8312 and tell us your address and what the door looks like.

PANEL & IMPACT DAMAGE REPAIR

How impact damage happens

Vehicle impact. Backing into the door is a common cause. Even a slow bump can dent, crack or bend a section.
Stray objects. Balls, bikes, tools and equipment can hit a panel and leave a dent or a crack.
Storm damage. Strong wind and flying debris can dent or crack panels, especially on lighter doors.
A door that hit something while closing. If the door closes on an obstruction, or runs out of line, the edge of a panel can bend.

Types of panel damage

How a panel is damaged affects whether it can be repaired or needs to be replaced.

Dents

A shallow dent may only be cosmetic, and the door can still work well. A deep or creased dent can weaken the panel and make the door bind.

Cracks

A crack can let in air and moisture and may spread over time. A cracked panel usually needs to be replaced.

Bent sections

A bent panel can pull the door out of line and strain the rollers, hinges and opener. It's worth getting checked.

Single panel or several

If only one section is damaged, replacing it can be a good fix. If several are, a new door may be the better choice.

Tracks

The metal guides on both sides of the door. They run vertically, then curve and run horizontally along the ceiling. They keep the door moving in a straight path.

Rollers

The small wheels on each side of the door that roll inside the tracks. Worn or damaged rollers are a common reason doors bind or jump.

Brackets

These hold the tracks to the wall and ceiling. If they loosen, the track shifts and the door no longer runs true.

Hinges

They join the door's sections, and the hinges at the sides also hold the rollers. A bent or cracked hinge can pull a section out of line.

Cables

Lift cables run from the bottom corners of the door up to the spring system. If one slips or breaks, one side of the door can hang lower than the other.

Common questions

Hand holding a smartphone

I backed into my door. Is it safe to use?

Not until it's checked. If a panel is bent, the door is crooked, a roller is out of the track or a cable looks loose, stop using it and don't run the opener. A door that looks fine can still have a bent track or loose hardware. Springs and cables are under high tension, so leave them alone and call us.

My car is stuck inside. What should I do?

Leave the car where it is and don't force the door or drive out under it. Call us at (252) 832-8312 with your address and what the door is doing. Once we've made the door safe, we work on getting it open so you can get your car out.

Can a dented panel be fixed, or does it need to be replaced?

A small, shallow dent is often only cosmetic, and the door can keep working. A deep dent, a crease, a crack, or a bend that makes the door bind usually means the section should be replaced. We look at it and tell you which applies.

Can you replace just one panel?

In many cases, yes, if the rest of the door is in good shape and a matching panel is still made for your door's model. Older or discontinued doors can be harder to match. We check that at the estimate.

Will the new panel match the rest of the door?

It depends on the model, color and age of your door. Even the right panel can look slightly different at first, because older panels fade in the sun. We tell you what to expect before any work starts.

How long does it take?

If a matching panel has to be ordered, it can take from several days to a few weeks to arrive, depending on the maker and model. Once the panel is here, replacing one section is usually done in a single visit. We tell you what to expect at the estimate.

Will my insurance cover it?

It may. Many homeowners policies cover sudden, accidental damage such as a vehicle hitting the door, minus your deductible, but every policy is different. Check your policy or ask your insurance company. Damage to the car itself usually falls under your auto policy. Take photos of the damage before it's repaired.
