What to do while you wait

Quick checks you can do safely: make sure the opener is plugged in and has power; wipe the two safety sensor lenses near the floor and check that nothing blocks them; and try new batteries in the remote. If you heard a loud bang or the door is very heavy, stop pressing the button. It may be a broken spring, and running the opener can make it worse. Don't pull the manual release cord on a door that's open or may have a broken spring, because the door can come down. Call us.
  1. Check that the opener is plugged in and the outlet has power.
  2. Wipe both safety sensor lenses near the floor and clear anything blocking them.
  3. Try fresh batteries in your remote.
  4. If you heard a loud bang or the door feels very heavy, stop pressing the button and call us.

OPENER / MOTOR REPAIR & REPLACEMENT

Why a garage door opener stops working

A problem with the door, not the opener. A broken spring or a door that's out of balance can make an opener look like it has failed. The motor hums, but the door is too heavy to lift.
Dirty or misaligned sensors. The two safety sensors near the floor must see each other. Dirt, a spider web or a bumped sensor can make the door stop or reverse.
Dead remote batteries or lost programming. A remote that has stopped working is often just a weak battery or a lost connection with the opener.
Power problems. A tripped breaker, a loose plug or a faulty outlet can leave the opener with no power at all.
Worn parts. Over the years, belts, chains, gears and trolleys wear down. Noise, slow movement and jerking are common signs.
Age and heavy use. An older opener that's run many times a day simply wears out. Once repairs start adding up, replacement can make more sense.

Opener types and features

Openers differ in how they move the door and how they're mounted. The right choice depends on your door, your garage and how you use it.

Chain drive

A metal chain pulls the door along a rail. It's a common, sturdy design, but it tends to be louder than other types.

Belt drive

A rubber belt does the same job and runs more quietly. It's a popular pick if there's a bedroom or living space next to or above the garage.

Wall-mount (jackshaft)

The motor sits on the wall beside the door instead of on a ceiling rail. It frees up ceiling space, which can help in garages with high ceilings or storage overhead.

Safety sensors

The two small sensors near the floor tell the door to reverse if something is in the way. They matter on every opener.

Remotes and keypads

Handheld remotes, car remotes and outside keypads. Tell us how your household uses the garage, and we go over what fits.

Smart / Wi-Fi options

Some openers connect to a phone app, so you can check or control the door from your phone. We install smart openers. Ask us about them at the estimate.

Repair or replace the opener?

We check the door and the opener together before recommending anything. Sometimes the right fix is on the door, not the opener.

Usually a repair

  • The problem is a sensor, a remote, a keypad or a wiring issue.
  • The opener is fairly new and otherwise runs well.
  • The door itself needs a repair, such as a spring, and the opener is fine.

Usually a replacement

  • The opener is old and keeps needing repairs.
  • The motor or main parts have failed.
  • It's very loud, slow or jerky and repairs won't fix that.
  • You want a quieter model or features your current opener doesn't have.

Common questions

Hand holding a smartphone

My opener hums but the door won't move. What's wrong?

Common causes are a broken spring or a door that has come disconnected from the opener. Don't keep pressing the button, and don't lift the door by hand until you know which. Call us and describe what you hear.

My door starts to close and then goes back up. Why?

This is often the safety sensors near the floor. If they are dirty, blocked or knocked out of line, the door reverses. Wipe both lenses and check that nothing is in the way. If it keeps happening, call us.

Should I repair or replace my opener?

It depends on what's wrong, the age of the opener and the condition of the door. We look at it, explain both options, and you decide. Price Before Work Starts.

Can you program remotes and keypads?

Yes, as part of an opener repair or replacement.

What opener do you install?

We go over the options with you at the estimate, based on your door and how it's used, at home or at your business. Tell us what you have now when you call.

How soon can you come?

Same-Day Service Available. Call (252) 832-8312 with your address. The time depends on your location and who is available.

Which type of opener is quietest?

Belt drive openers are generally quieter than chain drive. If noise matters to you, for example because a bedroom is above the garage, tell us when you call and we go over it at the estimate.

Can I add a smart opener to an older door?

Often, yes, since the opener and the door are separate parts. We check your door and your current setup and tell you what's possible.

My remote works only from close up. What's wrong?

A weak battery is a common reason, so try a new one first. If that doesn't help, there may be a problem with the receiver on the opener. Call us and we look at it.
